Risks of working in elevating work platforms

28 February 2023

WorkSafe is investigating a tragedy of a 31-year- old worker who tragically lost their life after being crushed between an elevated work platform and a roof purlin. This marks the first workplace fatality of 2023, serving as a reminder to all businesses that safety should always be prioritised in the workplace.

NECA supports WorkSafe's initiative on having Elevating Work Platforms (EWPs) standards across industries. Ensuring operators of EWPs are trained and competent, as well as, that maintenance is regularly conducted on the equipment to reduce risk

Further, NECA reinforces the importance for those on the worksite to adhere to safe working practices and ensure all safety systems are in place. It is critical that all parties involved in a workplace are aware of their duties and responsibilities when it comes to safety.

NECA’s message is a simple one: work safe, go home safely. Employers must ensure that safety is a priority on every worksite and take the necessary steps to mitigate risks and ensure everyone’s safety.

It is imperative that all businesses take every reasonable step to prevent injuries and deaths on the worksite. NECA works with its members and other stakeholders to ensure that our industry is a safe workplace for everyone.

It is only through a collaborative approach that we can continue to make progress in improving safety in the workplace.

If you don’t have a safety management system in place, we urge you to consider implementing one in place to ensure you and your workers are protected. NECA’s Safety Management System, HSEQ Plus is tailored to the electrical industry, you can learn more about it here.
